Saffron Walden Museum

Very interesting museum. Stayed for 2 hours. Good displays on local history and the wider north west Essex area. Good value for £2.50!

This was a little gem of a place. We went as a family (two kids under 10). It was £5 to get in which I thought was very cheap. I wasn't expecting such a varied amount of items on display. My children found the space exhibit, the fossil displays and the toys on display really interesting. I found the fossils and the pottery really interesting. We spent about an hour or 2 there, could have spent longer but had other things planned to go to. There would be something to interest most people at this museum.

Alright museum but i went there because j was in the area and i knew i could get in for free with Art Pass, anyway, flashed it to the older gent, said 1 with an art pass. Anyway, because Art Fund members get so many museums with entry with half price or exhibitions that require an uplift, i knew something was wrong but as i had no way to check i took it at face value that on this day was indeed a half price and not a free attraction with Art Pass. Anyway, its quite rare to meet another art pass member, its not well known about but on this occassion the 2 women behind me as i was walking away said Art Pass and were let through with no money changing hands. I questioned this and the moron behind the desk said "oh, i thought it was a student card". I mentioned the fact i flashed both sides as i always do and said loudly enough that it was an Art Fund Art Pass card. He claimed he didnt hear me. I made him hand me my money back, i often donate the money i saved anyway so museums who offer free entry get a double hit of benefits, on this occassion i was that annoyed through principle i didnt bother.

This place has something for everyone. It's truly a little gem. As someone over 65 only paid £1.25 to get in and it's worth so much more.

Cheap, small museum which is good for kids. Doesn't take too long to go round so they are less likely to get bored and they had little explorer rucksacks. There were quite a few kid height exhibits with signs saying dont touch though, and given that they are kid height that is quite a lot to ask of a small child. There is a mummy which is proportionate in size to the museum. There are some very creepy dolls. Dont look them in the eye.
